    Your data

Nothing leaves this file. Copy it out on a rest day and paste it into the tracker.

    The finding that matters most

Your car nights already absorbed the worst rate spikes You sleep in the Tesla Wed and Sat. Mapped against the calendar, that means New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Bozeman, Oklahoma City, Kansas City, Reno on Halloween and Pensacola on Thanksgiving Saturday — the eight worst nights on the whole itinerary — are all car nights. That is genuinely lucky, and it means the must-book-early list is much shorter than you'd expect.
One catch. Bozeman on 17 Oct and Minneapolis on 10 Oct are plausibly at or below freezing overnight. Camp Mode holding cabin temp in near-freezing conditions costs real range — budget a Supercharger stop the next morning rather than assuming you wake at 100%.

    Five nights to book early

Charlotte NCFri 4 Dec Book now
The one nobody flagged. The ACC Championship is at Bank of America Stadium on Saturday 5 Dec, noon kickoff — so Friday is the peak fill night, two fanbases arriving the evening before. Uptown sells out; suburban rates up 60–150%. Book the day your dates are firm, or stay out toward Concord or Gastonia.
Burlington VTMon 28 Sep 3–4 weeks
Peak foliage — Vermont's tourism board puts peak in the last week of September in the north. Small hotel base serving UVM, the lake and leaf-peepers at once. A Monday helps enormously. Expect $160–230, not the usual band. The only Northeast night worth breaking the 3–5 day rule for.
Mobile ALFri 27 Nov 2 weeks
Day after Thanksgiving, and the Iron Bowl is ~4 hours away the following Saturday. Regional spillover is plausible.
    Seattle WAFri 23 Oct Conditional
The 2026 World Series opens that Friday. If the Mariners are in it, Seattle is unbookable at any price. Low odds, catastrophic if it lands — watch the ALCS (11–20 Oct) and book the moment it resolves.
    Milwaukee WIFri 9 Oct Conditional
MLB Division Series runs 3–10 Oct. If the Brewers make it, 9 Oct could be a home game. Check the bracket in late September.

    Worries that turned out false

    Sheridan WY Fine
26 lodging properties, 12+ chains — Hampton, Holiday Inn Express, Fairfield, Comfort, Candlewood, Quality, Best Western and more. A well-supplied I-90 stop, and mid-October is well past the rodeo peak. Take it off the list.
    Bozeman MT Fine
Montana State is away on 17 Oct. Mid-October is genuine shoulder — post-Yellowstone, pre-ski. And it's a car night anyway.
    Anchorage AK Probably cheap
Backwards from what you'd assume. Late October is shoulder-to-low season — the summer cruise and Denali product has shut down and aurora traffic hasn't started. Likely one of your cheaper nights. Moderate confidence; monthly Anchorage rate data isn't published.
Knoxville, Atlanta, Phoenix, Denver, Des Moines, Lexington Clear
All checked against actual 2026 schedules. Tennessee's season ends 28 Nov away; the SEC Championship is 5 Dec, after you leave Atlanta; the NASCAR finale moved to Homestead; the Broncos are away then on bye. Knoxville on 5 Dec will be empty.

    Loyalty — worth about $1,000

Run Wyndham as primary, Choice as fallback Wyndham earns 10 points per dollar or 1,000 points per stay, whichever is more — and that floor is per stay, not per night. Your trip is almost entirely one-night stays, so below ~$100/night you earn 1,000 points regardless of how cheap the room is. The cheaper the room, the higher your effective rebate. No other major US programme works this way.
Timing. Wyndham's award chart changes on 15 September 2026, two days into your trip — the cheapest tier drops from 7,500 to 5,000 points. That's an improvement at the bottom, which is the only end you'll touch.

The play: bank points across September and October (~30–35 stays), then burn them from mid-November on the cheap Southern and Midwestern legs — Wichita, Little Rock, Shreveport, Jackson, Mobile, Charleston WV are exactly where 5,000-point Super 8 and Days Inn redemptions live. Realistically 10–14 free nights, worth $700–1,000.

Marriott would clear Platinum at 66 nights, but its perks are lounge access, breakfast and suite upgrades — worth nothing to a man eating once a day at 3pm and leaving at 5am. Take the points, not the status.

    Booking tactics

Book non-refundableThe free-cancellation premium is 10–20%. At a 3–5 day lead your plans are already fixed, so you're paying for flexibility you won't use. Across 66 nights that's $700–1,300.
Book direct, logged inMember rates run 5–10% below public, and OTA bookings generally earn no points and no elite nights at all. Run every search three ways: member, AAA, corporate.
Late booking is real — but 8–15 days, not 3–5 Two independent studies agree: NerdWallet found ~13% cheaper at 15 days out across 2,500+ rates; Hotels.com found 23% cheaper booking 8–14 days ahead. Neither tested 3–5 days. For 40 of your cities the difference is negligible in a soft autumn market. For the five flagged above, 3–5 days is genuinely risky.

National occupancy in your window sits around 58% — hotels are half empty. And the national rate barely moves between late October and mid-December. Autumn is structurally in your favour.

Charging — don't optimise for it

Only ~27% of US hotels have EV charging, and that figure skews to full-service, upper-tier, West Coast properties — a Super 8 in Wichita is well below it. Hilton is the exception: a 2023 deal put Tesla Wall Connectors into up to 2,000 US hotels, densest at Hampton. Where a Hampton is within $10–15 of your cheapest option, take it — an overnight 11.5kW charge is a full battery.

Otherwise treat charging as a separate line, not a booking constraint. A Supercharger session is 20 minutes at 5:15am and ~$15–25. Filter in the Tesla app, never on the hotel site — listed "EV charging" amenities are notoriously wrong.

    The budget line

$95–115realistic all-in average per night, incl. tax
    $6,300–7,60066 hotel nights, before awards
    $5,500–6,800after 10–14 free award nights
~40%of your $16,000 — your single largest line

Bands are anchored to real data: US midscale and economy ADR was $86 in April 2026, Choice's US system ADR was $95.05 across FY2025, national blended ADR is ~$156. Treat the per-state bands as ±15%.

    The system

1 · Grocery prepared counterRotisserie + bagged salad + a deli protein side. Every one of the 50 stops has this. $5–16.
    2 · National fast casualChipotle, Panda, Chick-fil-A grilled, Jersey Mike's. Continuous service — no mid-afternoon gap. $10–17.
3 · Cava / SweetgreenOnly ~26–31 states between them. A bonus, never a plan. No Cava in Sacramento, Seattle or Portland OR.
Jersey Mike's is the only chain in all 50Including Alaska and Hawaii. It's the backstop when nothing else exists.

Two rules that matter more than where

Eat at 2:45, not 3:00. 3pm is the trough between restock batches — Publix refills at 2 and 4, Whole Foods on ~4-hour intervals. Fifteen minutes earlier is a materially better plate.
Charge first, then drive. The post-meal dip lands right when you'd be pulling out at 5pm, on a 5am alarm, into monotonous interstate. Take the 25-minute charge immediately after eating and let the dip pass in a car park, not at 70mph.

    Stops that need a plan

Snacks that survive a hot car

Jerky and meat sticks · foil tuna/salmon/chicken pouches (best protein per dollar) · roasted edamame, chickpea snacks, pumpkin seeds · whey in a dry shaker.

Avoid: coated protein bars — they liquefy and re-set wrong. Cheese, yoghurt and boiled eggs are out on the 26 car nights.
